November 1, 1961 was a historic day for Marshall University, as WMUL 88.1 FM signed on as West Virginia’s first public radio station. “When the station signed on 50 years ago, no one could imagine the progress and success future students would experience,” wrote Dave Wilson of the West Virginia MetroNews Network. “WMUL-FM students have won more than 1,100 state, regional, national and international awards. Over a third of those are for first place.” The station has been a regular in CBI’s National Student Production Awards, earning five finalist plaques this year.
