WLOY, the non-profit, student-run radio station of Loyola University Maryland, has been selected as the Loyola Club of the Year for its dedication to the community and service this year.
Each year, the Loyola Club of the Year award is presented to one student club or organization that has shown outstanding service to the Loyola community and consistent commitment to the Jesuit Values of Loyola University. The Green and Grey society chose WLOY to be this year’s winner because, “WLOY has exemplified the Jesuit ideal of being men and women for others. They dedicated their time, resources, and effort for many clubs on campus and asked for nothing in return. Their work with Relay for Life, A Night for Haiti, SGA events, and the many programs started in the surrounding community, have impacted us all in so many ways. This club has taken their commitment to a new level, and it is not just focused on providing great music and entertainment, but bettering the experience for all students and using their resources to help with worthwhile causes.
The 2009-10 academic year saw new shows aimed at improving children’s literacy (What Happens Next?), hosting radio boot camps for pre-collegiate students, interviews with aide workers in Haiti and a new show interviewing the homeless (Both Feet In). WLOY provided fundraising for many causes but it’s largest success was raising over $22,000 for Haitian earthquake relief. WLOY is honored to receive such a prestigious award, and hopes to continue its dedication to the community for many years to come.
Congratulations to WLOY!
