Station Spotlight: Westminster’s Titan Radio

titan1Tell me a little history about your station and where your station is now?
Westminster’s radio station has been around for a long time now.  I don’t know the exact age, but a believe it started in the  60s.  Now, we’re a commercial-free Hot Adult Contemporary station in Lawrence and Mercer counties.  We’ve been ranked in the Princeton Review’s top 20 College Radio Stations for seven years now, and made the top 10 for the last two years.

What sets your station apart from other college radio stations?
Unlike other college stations, we stick to a format.  The school realizes that professional radio stations don’t play whatever they want, the have a structure and a pattern they follow.  While it’s fun to have a college station that plays rap one hour and Broadway the next, we try to operate ours at a professional level.

Why did you choose to work at the radio station?
As a Broadcast and Digital Communications major, I was required to work here as part of my studies.  I soon began taking on extra roles outside of my classes because I enjoyed working here so much.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done for your station?
Once I did a 12-hour broadcast from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next morning.  I spent the night in the radio station.  The goal was to raise awareness for the local women’s crisis shelter as part of a “Take Back the Night” event on campus.

What’s the best part of college radio? And the hardest part?
The best part is the freedom to come up with new ideas and be creative.  The harder you work, the more fun things you get to do.   The hardest part is trying to balance your work at the station with the rest of your classes.  If I could, I would work Titan Radio full time!
