Station Spotlight: Black Hills State University’s KBHU and KJKT

Special thanks to Station Manager Hannah Kloiber for answering the questions.

KBHUKJKTTell me a little history about your station and where your station is now?
The station started broadcasting on 89.1 in 1974. We have moved to several different locations on campus since, and we are now located in the basement of the student union and began broadcasting on the 90.7 frequency in 2009.

What sets your station apart from other college radio stations?
Our campus radio station is completely run by students, and we let any student participate. Our program is offered to majors and non-majors alike. Any BHSU student is welcome to come in and train to have their own weekly radio show on The Buzz.

Why did you choose to work at the radio station?
I personally chose to work for the station because a good friend of mine was a Mass Communications major and was heavily involved in the station. She really talked it up, and although I am a Marketing and Theatre major I am now the current Station Manager and loving every minute of it.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done for your station?
The craziest thing I have done for the station is play a board game live on air. I know it doesn’t sound too crazy, but we played The Game of Things and I enlisted the help of some close friends to help me play the game live on air. We had a blast and we even had a caller call in to win a copy of the game. It was a ton of fun!

What’s the best part of college radio? And the hardest part?
My favorite part about college radio is getting to work with the equipment and know that there are actually people out there listening. One of the downsides is that sometimes our transmitter goes down, and because it is all the way up on Terry Peak, it can take a bit to get it up and running again.
