South Dakota newspaper story examines webcasting at area college stations

picture-3.pngThe Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls, SD reports on the area college stations in “Rules complicate webcasting efforts” by Bryann Becker.

“Noncommercial broadcasting stations such as college radio already pay copyright fees for musical works to three different national organizations, according to College Broadcasters Inc. A separate set of webcasting fees to cover the sound recording copyright is collected by the organization SoundExchange. In addition, stations must compile airplay listings. ‘In a nutshell, what the recording industry wants … is online radio stations and now broadcasters to pay per song that is played per listener,’ says USD’s U. Radio general manager/adviser Candace Walton.”
