Roger on the Radio ready to retire after 33 years behind the mic

Roger Burt was the first voice ever heard on Gaston College’s radio station, 91.7 FM WSGE, in 1980. After 33 years serving the station as a volunteer, he’ll hang up his microphone.

“I was extremely nervous,” Burt recalls. Those nerves never went away. Burt says starting up his radio show, “Roger on the Radio,” always brings back that feeling. “Even after 33 years, within the first few minutes of a show, I have this like, ‘Gee, what am I going to do? What’s going to happen?’” Burt said. “But I always get into the groove, where it’s like I’m talking to a friend.”
