New Copyright Fees May be a Significant Change for Some Stations
The Copyright Royalty Board has published a new fee schedule for FCC licensed stations, including college radio stations. The fees are the result of a rate setting process before the Copyright Royalty Board which resulted in numerous settlements. The settlements relevant to college radio stations were negotiated by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the various rights organizations.

Stations with an ERP of 100 watts or less will pay the level one fees regardless of enrollment.
SESAC fees will remain as a flat fee of $140 subject to an annual adjustment as determined by the consumer price index or 2% whichever is greater. The rates in the chart above represent a 2% annual increase and will not be further adjusted by the CPI.
The public may comment and object to any or all of the proposed regulations contained in this notice. Such comments and objections must be submitted no later than May 25, 2012.
The rate setting process for these royalty fees is similar to the one used to set webcasting fees for student stations. CBI represented student stations in the webcasting rate setting process. Here ACE represented college radio stations. These fees are not inclusive of the webcasting fees paid to SoundExchange.
