College of the Ozarks radio station KCOZ switches to Christian music format

Not all college stations are the same.  In fact, CBI knows this to be true because if you look at most NPR station’s web sites, you will find something to say that it started as a student station.  Many college stations are owned by the college, but aren’t programmed by students and the students miss out on the educational value offered by programming and managing a student station.  And as we saw last year, three of the largest student stations had their FM license sold by the licensee.

In this instance, it appears a college station, where the college controls content decided to change content.  See this article .  While the article doesn’t specifically discuss who controls content, it seems evident that it is not the students.

The lesson to be learned is that if you do control your content, don’t take that for granted!

The CBI fall conference in Orlando will address issues such as content, legal requirements and the sale of student station licenses.
