Station Name: WHWS-LP 105.7FM
Station City and State: Geneva, NY
Institution: Hobart & William Smith Colleges
Describe the programming on your station:
Radio Bilingue by day, Rock-Alternative by night!
What makes your station unique?
Aren’t all college radio stations unique? If you must know, we’re the only Spanish-language radio outlet in the region and we broadcast over 100 HWS sports games every year.
How does your station prepare students for post-graduate opportunities?
We don’t have a radio curriculum at HWS, so the station provides different opportunities for students.
How does your station keep students motivated and involved?
We give as much director control over management functions and airshifts as is feasible to the students. We also try to engage the student body on their turf via live broadcasts like “Fridays at the Scandling Cafe”.
How has your station benefited from being a member of CBI?
CBI has been a tremendous help in getting our streaming going and keeping it legal. CBI is also very helpful in managing our complex relationship with WEOS, the campus NPR affiliate.
Please share any interesting stories, facts or events your station has had.
I mentioned sports- we covered over 100 HWS games across nine sports, in addition to airing local high school hockey and summertime NYCBL baseball games. We also have FATSC, a live two-hour broadcast from the student center’s cafe every week; it’s proven quite popular with DJ’s and students alike.
