CBI Board Elections: Candidate Statements

Please consider participating in the CBI Board Elections. Electronic ballots are sent to the email account associated with your CBI membership. Statements from candidates are available below, including two candidates who are unopposed:

Candidate Statement: Secretary
Rick Dunkle, General Manager, UINDY TV (University of Indianapolis)

Rick was a Pulliam Fellow at Franklin College before earning his BA in Cinema & Television Production from Columbia College Hollywood. He earned his MFA in Screenwriting from Loyola Marymount University while working his way up in the Los Angeles studio system, where he served as a Research, Marketing, and Copywriting professional at Paramount Pictures and Sony Entertainment before transitioning to the creative side of the entertainment industry where he spent 12 years at the Criminal Minds franchise, serving as a writer, producer, and content strategist.  Rick spent 20 years in Hollywood before returning to his home state of Indiana where he now teaches as Assistant Professor of Practice in Electronic Media and serves as General Manager of UINDY TV at the University of Indianapolis. Rick has worked as a news and public affairs reporter, entertainment columnist, branding copywriter, social media strategist, television producer, screenwriter, and digital storyteller. He additionally serves as adviser to the UINDY Film Club and UINDY Chapter of the National Electronic Media Association. Why CBI? “For me, it’s all about the students. Having grown up in small town Indiana and been constantly told what I aspired to was out of my reach, I am personally invested in proving to students that no ambition is impossible as long as you are willing to put in the work to develop your talent, make those necessary connections, and support your colleagues. I want to do the very same with CBI by finding better ways to support our member schools and the students and faculty in those institutions so every resource and opportunity possible is made available to them. Additionally, I would like to expand program offerings at the conventions to include more TV programming, and spread that out on the schedule so they’re not conflicting with one another.”

Development Director Candidate Statement
Sarah Lemanczyk, Program Advisor, KUOM (University of Minnesota)

I am passionate about non-profit raising – almost as passionate as I am about student media. With over 20 years in public radio, and 30 years of non-profit work I have a keen understanding of the Development world. A few highlights:
• Helped create a silent auction for a Manhattan Theatre Group that raised over $5,000,000 for the theater in ONE night
• Worked to secure funding from the state of Minnesota to develop student programming and get my newsroom positions paid
• Have TRIPLED the amount Radio K makes in its pledge drives over the past five years
• Have volunteered as a judge for CBI work for three years running
• Ran sessions when the CBI convention was in Minneapolis
I would love to be a part of securing the longevity of student media with CBI. We can only do what we have the money for – and I believe I can help us make the sky the only limit for our students. (too cheesy?) But no! Really, my favorite part of teaching, of Radio K – of the student work I see through CBI is the students – their talent and their passion deserve our best. Let’s give ’em the sky.

Student Representative Candidate Statements

Clara Ketchell, Communications Director, KJHK (University of Kansas)

Hi! My name is Clara Ketchell, and I am a student at the University of Kansas, majoring in Political Science and Sociology with a minor in Journalism. I am also the Communications Director at KJHK 90.7 FM. In my position at KJHK, I oversee four employees and coordinate fundraising, graphic design, community engagement, and all of our social media. In my free time, I enjoy sitcom television, photography, and good food. I attended the College Broadcast Inc. conference last year, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I found the roundtable on women in broadcast media particularly interesting. If I am elected as student representative, I hope to further open up conversations about the role broadcast media plays in social justice movements. I believe that radio, and journalism as a whole, has incredible power to create tangible, grassroots change. I would love to speak to other students and industry professionals about the power of radio to combat social issues and better the communities they serve.

Joey Nardone, Programming Director, WSOU (Seton Hall University)

I am Joey Nardone, a junior at Seton Hall. I joined WSOU in 2019 and after a gap year I returned as assistant programming director in the 2021-22 school year and became the programming director the following year. WSOU’s longstanding reputation not only in the college radio community but also in the professional radio industry has prepared me to work alongside other radio professionals. In my role as Program Director, I manage over 40 DJs, interact with alumni, many of whom currently working in the media industry, and format all of WSOU’s programming. I also led the Program Directors roundtable and spoke on a panel that talked about working with administration at the 2022 NSEMC in Baltimore My goals as Student Representative to the CBI board are to plan student events that promote interaction, increase attendance to panels, and add a community interaction aspect. Ideas I have include working with a local musical artist and venue to have a student social and taking advantage of being in Orlando with an event that ties in the proximity to the Atlantic coast. Thank you for your consideration.

Fletcher Peterson, General Manager, WZND (Illinois State University)

I currently serve as the General Manager at WZND Fuzed Radio broadcasting from Illinois State University. Prior to assuming the role of General Manager, I served as Program Director and produced an award-winning weekly throwbacks show. I am also a journalism student at ISU’s television news outlet, TV-10. Under my directorship and through the hard work of my staff, I am proud to say WZND has widened our community outreach, increased revenue, and regained a number of interns not seen since before the start of the pandemic. With a broad range of experience in student media, I believe I can offer a unique perspective to the Board of College Broadcasters Inc. Through my time at WZND and TV-10, I have seen firsthand the effects quality broadcast education can have on students’ abilities to achieve their goals and potentials. I would be honored to further the mission of CBI in helping reach every campus nationwide with informative and critical programs and events aimed at producing quality student-broadcasters.

Kailyn Shalosky, Program Director, WMCO/Orbit Media (Muskingum University)

My name is Kailyn Shalosky, the current TV and Radio Program Director for Orbit Media and WMCO, New Concord, which I got involved with in the fall of 2020, my first semester of college. I’ve also served as News Director and Music Director, have my own radio show once a week, and I’ve trained four DJs in my five semesters. I’m always looking for ways to expand my media horizons, which is why I’m interested in applying for the CBI Student Representative position as it would be an entire change in atmosphere for me. I’m a huge advocate for college broadcasting, and I love helping my team achieve their goals on both sides of radio and television. This experience will allow me to not only impact my own station, but stations across the country. The unity of college broadcasting is important, and I want to help future generations feel inspired.
