Cal State San Marcos students start Internet Radio

According to an article in the North County Times, after a two decade struggle Cal State San Marcos finally has a student radio station, CSUSM. The article states that the station currently has one live program and the rest of the programming is “compiled in advance”.

The audio stream appears to be hosted by ustream.tv. The service appears to be a free/ad supported streaming service backed by venture capital.  It also appears to provide a means to allow “members” to interact with facebook and twitter.

The story on CSUSM says little about their funding source.  From the small amount of information provided by the by article we can only speculate that funding is fairly nominal.  My non-objective review says that this station needs to secure a funding source as I suspect that ustream may not be around long and the station will need to either secure free streaming services from Cal State (which should not be hard to do) or pay for streaming services from a commercial provided.

It would also appear that the station is the vision of two students.  It would be wise for them to rapidly expand the stations DJ and management staff and develop a means of providing the fledgling organization with continuity.   Note that the article says the current President, Rosario Vizcaino is a senior.  Far too many fledgling student stations fail due to a lack of continuity.

Congratulations to Rosario, Ryan and the students for getting this station off the ground! CBI and its members stand ready to offer CSUSM assistance and encourage its members to join the CBI free email list!
