Hopelessly late but worth the wait

WNUR Underground Archive Project Sheds Light on College Radio History
College radio history is near and dear to me; so I am thrilled to learn about the WNUR Underground Archive Project. Launched initially as a student project by WNUR (see my 2008 station tour) participant Brock Stuessi, the website features a glimpse into the Northwestern University radio station’s rock music collection. Featuring scans of album covers and handwritten music director-penned reviews, Stuessi started the project by taking a closer look at material from 1980 to 2000.

WRFL Celebrates 30 Years on the Air With Three Days of Events March 2-4
Turning 30 years old is a big deal, and WRFL-FM, the University of Kentucky’s student-run radio station, plans to celebrate its 30th birthday with a big bash, and everyone is invited. The WRFL 30th Birthday Bash will take place Friday through Sunday, March 2-4, at the The Burl on Manchester Street in Lexington.

Global Music Rights To Get Just $1 From Non-Comm Stations
Commercial radio’s rate-setting process with most of the performance rights organizations may still be a work in progress, but noncommercial broadcasters now know how much they’ll have to pay to ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC during the next five years. The Copyright Royalty Board has published in the Federal Register the new fee schedule that details the various rates, based on whether the noncommercial station is a public radio outlet, a religious station, or a college radio station. The term covers Jan. 1, 2018 through Dec. 31, 2022.

Tuning in to Campus Tradition with WCNI
I will admit that I only knew Connecticut College has a student-run radio station because my uncle, a member of the class of ’78, was part of the radio station during his time at Conn. That said, discussion of Conn’s WCNI radio station (channel 90.9, also found at wcniradio.org) appears limited on campus. Wondering if my first-year status had just limited my scope of WCNI conversation, or if WCNI really is a ghost on campus, I decided to find out more about the mysterious station.

From curating playlists to handling on-demand phone calls, these broadcast stations dedicate long hours to ensure a well-thought-out listening experience. A look at the sounds of Impact 88.9 WDBM, 88.3 WXOU and 89.1 WIDR shows that there are some promising trends in the sounds of college radio.
