From a Press Release…
Los Altos Hills, CA – Award-winning, student and volunteer-run Foothill College radio station KFJC 89. 7 FM is launching its 32nd annual “Month of Mayhem” on May 1, 2012. This annual KFJC tradition features a month of special programming produced by KFJC DJs on a variety of topics. This year’s schedule includes 58 specials, with more being added throughout the month of May.
The Month of Mayhem began on KFJC in 1981and has always been an eagerly anticipated event, as DJs create and curate an impressive range of programs during that time.
The 2012 schedule includes music genre-specific specials focused on extreme prog, doom & sludge, 1960s and 70s psychedelia from around the world, and noise. Additionally, there will be several 24-hour specials devoted to James Brown, Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, and deceased artists (“Day of the Dead”). A few specials investigate instruments, including the saxophone in surf music, the lap piano (jazz guitar), and the Hammond B-3 organ. Label specials will explore the output of Touch & Go Records, Man’s Ruin, and 100% Pure (to name a few). Other programs will delve into the careers of various artists, ranging from John Cage to Hank Williams to Weasel Walter to Tiny Tim.
Several specials will serve as tributes to departed KFJC DJs. “Return to the House of Games” is a 3-part special devoted to the exotica/word jazz/soundtrack/lounge/library music style of music that former KFJC DJ Jack Diamond was an expert in. Similarly, the “Monday Beatdown” will recreate a show in the style of former KFJC DJ Spiderman, who championed underground hip hop and also drew musical linkages across a range of genres.
A selection of specials will focus on whimsical themes like breakfast foods, summer songs, and spoken musical interludes; whereas others will examine headier topics like radical political movements. Radio and music history will be presented in specials devoted to the Firesign Theatre comedy troupe and to the late 1980s psychedelic underground artists featured in Pow! Magazine.
A few live performances will be sprinkled into the schedule, including sets by DJ Female Convict Scorpion and Will Sprott of Mumlers. Additionally, jazz legend Patty Waters will stop by for a guest DJ stint on a special edition of the “Jazz Collective.”
Specials will air between Tuesday, May 1, 2012 and June 1, 2012. The complete Mayhem calendar can be viewed at: http://kfjc.org/mayhem/ . Tune in to KFJC at 89.7 FM in the San Francisco Bay Area and online at: http://kfjc.org/netcast/index.php
